How to write a letter to your future self (+ free templates)

Why bother?

A letter to your future self isn't a diary entry. It's a time capsule with a delivery date. You capture who you are right now, your worries, your hopes, your weird Tuesday afternoon mood, and send it forward to a version of you who's forgotten all of it.

When it arrives, it's like getting a message from an old friend. Except the old friend is you.

Step 1: Pick a delivery date

The date matters more than you think. Different timelines create different experiences:

  • 1 week: Great for accountability. "Did you actually go to the gym?"
  • 1 month: Perfect for checking in on a specific goal or life change
  • 6 months: Long enough to forget what you wrote. The surprise factor kicks in.
  • 1 year: The classic. You'll be genuinely shocked at how much has changed.
  • 5 years: A true time capsule. You're writing to a near-stranger.
  • There's no wrong answer. If you've never done this before, start with 6 months. It's the sweet spot between surprise and relevance.

Step 2: Write like you're talking to a friend

Drop the formality. Nobody's grading this. The best future-self letters sound like a voice memo, not an essay.

      Start with something real:
    • What are you doing right now? (Literally, where are you sitting?)
    • What's on your mind today?
    • What are you excited about? Worried about? Working toward?
      Then go deeper:
    • What do you hope is different by the time you read this?
    • What do you want to remember about this moment?
    • Is there something you need to hear from your past self?

The trick: Be specific. "I hope things are good" means nothing in six months. "I hope you finally told Sarah about the business idea" means everything.

Step 3: Don't overthink the ending

You don't need a grand conclusion. Some of the best endings are simple:

  • "Good luck out there."
  • "I believe in you. Seriously."
  • "Remember: the small stuff doesn't matter."
  • "P.S., your password for Netflix is still the same one. You really should change it."
  • A little humor goes a long way when future-you is having a rough day.

Step 4: Send it somewhere you can't unsend it

This is the key step. If you write a letter and save it in your notes app, you'll read it in two days. The magic of a future-self letter is that it arrives when you've forgotten about it.

That's why tools like Laterr exist. Write your message, pick a date, and it gets delivered to your inbox automatically. Free, no account needed. You can even schedule a phone call if you'd rather hear your own voice.

    >
    > The biggest thing on my mind is [thing]. I'm hoping that by the time you read this, [hope].
    >

    The Goal Checker

    > 1. [Goal 1]
    > 2. [Goal 2]
    > 3. [Goal 3]
    >
    > I don't care if you hit all three. I care if you tried. Did you? If not, what got in the way? Be honest.
    >
    > Either way, I'm proud of you for getting here.

    The Pep Talk

    > Hey. I don't know what kind of day you're having, but I wrote this on a day when I felt [emotion].
    >
    > I want you to remember: [encouraging truth about yourself].
    >
    > You've gotten through hard things before. You'll get through whatever this is too.
    >
    > Don't forget to [small kind thing, take a walk, call a friend, eat something good].
