The hardest part of writing to your future self is staring at a blank screen. You know you want to say something meaningful, but what?
These 25 prompts are organized by theme. Pick one, or pick five. Mix and match. There's no wrong way to do this.
Goals and ambitions
1. "The one thing I want to change by the time you read this is..."
Name it. Be specific. Vague goals produce vague results.
2. "I'm scared to try [thing], but I'm going to do it anyway because..."
This one becomes incredibly powerful when it arrives and you've already done the thing.
3. "If you haven't started [goal] yet, here's your sign. Start today."
A gentle kick from past-you is sometimes all it takes.
4. "The habit I'm trying to build right now is..."
Track it across time. Are you still doing it? Did it stick? Did something better replace it?
5. "My biggest professional goal right now is..."
Career ambitions change faster than we think. Capturing them is a reality check.
Relationships
6. "The person who matters most to me right now is [name], because..."
People come and go. This prompt captures who was important, and why.
7. "I need to tell [person] how I feel about [thing]. Have you done it yet?"
Your future self might need the push. Past-you can give it.
8. "The friendship I want to invest more in is..."
A nudge to reach out. Sometimes that's all it takes.
9. "Right now, my relationship with [person] feels like..."
Honest snapshots of relationships are some of the most powerful things to revisit.
10. "The conversation I've been avoiding is..."
If you're still avoiding it when the letter arrives, that tells you something.
Mindset and mental health
11. "Today I feel [emotion] because [reason]. And that's okay."
Permission from your past self to feel whatever you're feeling.
12. "The thing I'm most worried about right now is..."
Half the time, by the time the letter arrives, the worry has dissolved. That's reassuring.

Write the pep talk when you're feeling strong. Receive it when you need it.

The most mundane details become the most meaningful over time.

Music is the ultimate time machine. Name the song. Future-you will press play and be teleported.

Wake-up time, coffee order, commute, lunch spot. In a year, half of this will be different.
19. "The book/show/movie I'm obsessed with right now is..."
Entertainment choices are a surprisingly vivid snapshot of who you are.

Joy fades fast. Capture it before it does.
Big questions

The answer reveals your priorities. Compare it year over year.

Simple, but it never gets old. Gratitude from your past self is a gift.
